Crater Senior Aiming For Sub-14 Performance On Track

By Doug Binder, DyeStat Editor

Tyrone Gorze of Crater OR, ranked No. 3 individually after he won the Doug Speck sweepstakes race Sept. 16 at the 41st Woodbridge Cross Country Classic Presented by ASICS in California, is taking aim at the high school-only record in the 5,000 meters on the track -- smack dab in the middle of cross country season.

Crater High's Twilight Meet is a way for the Comets and others in the area to test their fitness and speed before heading into the second half of the cross country season.

Gorze, a Washington commit, used last year's Crater Twilight to run 14:29.3, a confidence-building performance that was part of his run up to a sixth-place finish at the Eastbay Cross Country Championships in San Diego.

This year, Gorze will try to surpass the time of Chris Derrick at the 2008 Arcadia Invitational, where he ran 13:55.96. That's the fastest time in a high school-only race.

Only eight high school boys have run under 14 minutes for 5,000 on the track in the U.S., including Lex Young, who did it at the Sound Running The Track Meet last May. Young's 13:43.95 edged ahead of Gerry Lindgren for No. 2 all-time behind Galen Rupp's record 13:37.91. In that same race, Gorze ran 14:00.34.

On Thursday night at 8:40 p.m. Pacific in Central Point, Gorze will test the 5,000 once again, paced by his Crater teammate, sophomore Josiah Tostenson

The meet includes eight races, which begin at 5 p.m.

Gorze placed 12th for the United States in the 5,000 meters Aug. 1 at the World Athletics U20 Championships in Cali, Colombia.
