Tyrone Gorze, a senior at Crater High in Oregon, won the Doug Speck boys sweepstakes race at the 41st Woodbridge Cross Country Classic Presented by ASICS at Great Park in Irvine, Calif. Gorze covered the 3-mile layout in 13:42.8 for the No. 4 performance in meet history, regardless of venue, leading Crater to a runner-up team effort with 139 points. Gorze became the first male athlete outside California to win the sweepstakes title, snapping a run of 18 consecutive victories for athletes from the host state since the sweepstakes races were first added to the meet schedule in 2003.
